With the ever-increasing demand of customers and employers to have CEOs that are authentic and genuine, it has become crucial for today’s business leaders to understand the significance of being transparent. They must know who they are, what their strengths and weaknesses are and when they may lean on others. Playing games or acting tough doesn’t serve any purpose for leaders in business.

The objective of writing this article is to highlight variegated reasons as to why business leaders must never hide their weaknesses and they are as listed below:

1. Trust once lost can’t be regained.

When business leaders try to be someone who they are not; the trust employees, clients and investors develop in them tend to crash sooner or later and this results in toxic corporate culture.

By denying their vulnerabilities, the leaders of the businesses act as if they have nothing to lose and by doing so they fail to regain the trust of those who have a vested interest in their company.

2. You can’t have it both ways.

The leaders may think that by concealing the depth of their insecurities, they look more stable or attractive to the outside world. This is, however, far from the truth. The reason being this attitude stops them from bringing their whole self into work. In order to be able to connect with people at grass root levels, the leaders must understand that there is nothing wrong with being vulnerable in business. Instead, the right thing to do is to face adversity and build resilience.

3. It helps in gaining the support of the team.

Ironically, it gets easier for leaders to gain the support and cooperation of people in the workplace by stop being perfect all the time. This is because only when leaders are able to show their weaknesses and be open with co-workers, they feel confident asking for help and even more, they feel motivated to share their experiences. And when team members are exposed to uncertainty, they are willing to pull themselves together and address the challenge. It, therefore, helps in creating a “we-centric” culture in the workplace and helps in building teams that are stronger and better connected. Furthermore, the members of teams that are led by leaders who are not afraid of sharing their weaknesses are not separated by distance, fear or judgment. Thus, leaders must never refrain from sharing their experiences and things (good or bad) that are going on with their teams.

4. Truth is not for faint-hearted leaders.

The leaders who are faint-hearted will always be looking for ways that can help them hide their weaknesses. But the true leaders are the ones who will be comfortable in accepting that they don’t know a particular thing or can’t handle a given situation. In fact, those who have the courage to be vulnerable are the ones who lead their lives towards transformation and have the power to face uncertainties in life and career. The truth might not always be an easy option, but it is certainly not a weakness.

5. Vulnerability and courage go hand in hand.

Vulnerability in leaders and the courage the leaders manifest go hand in hand. Look around and you’ll find courageous leaders are the ones getting attracted by problems and emotions all the time. Neither does it make them look weak nor do people start respecting them any less. In fact, it makes them real leaders and true human beings.

6. You can’t be there for everyone all the time

What you must know is that you can never become everyone’s answering machine. You should be approachable to others but that doesn’t mean it’s alright to neglect your own work and schedule. The best thing to do is to be honest and say ‘NO’ whenever you can’t be available to others.
